01:47 am New Orleans is a teenager... by Kurt Vonnegut, Jr.
New Orleans is a teenager, all full of potential looking forward to the life standing in front of it. It’s hard to imagine middle aged from that vantage point. Middle Aged being a little more mature, a little more knowing, a little more than it was. Mistakes are made, paths that are followed for some time and abandoned for better paths showing that show themselves with the acquired knowledge of the passing of time. Few people know who they are or who they’re going to be as they move forward into the world. Some think they know and are wrong. Some seem to be right but there’s this nagging feeling that with more exploration; more mistakes, they could have been something else – not better or worse – just something else. ( Read more... )

03:36 pm Reasons why today is a good day for me...
1. I sold my 11th pre-order copy of "Dont Worry Honey, I Live Here: How Locals Celebrate Mardi Gras" (click here for more info)
and
2. I got the greenlight to produce a short online film for a local arts organization. The topic is one of my favorites: the local media!
I'll interview journalists on their experiences covering the storm, as well as their thoughts on why the city should be rebuilt.
The film can only be 6-10 minutes and even though the group who is sponsoring me considers the pay low, it's good money this pauper!

01:43 pm "Do you know much about chocolate? You make it by combining white milk with dark chocolate and you end up with a deliscious drink!" - Nagin to WDSU reporter.
I think our mayor has lost his filter, like most everyone else down here these days. His statement was one of the many crazy things that you just have to laugh about. I can't decide if he's out of it or if he said that line to get more national coverage of the city. Who knows. But I smell a cush job waiting for him with the NAACP (like our last mayor currently has) after he's not reelected this year.
Man, I love this city and all its characters!

02:35 pm - Arrested! This morning I made a color copy of my passport at Kinkos for a tv game show thing a friend and I are trying out for... and when the Kinkos guy spotted my copy he came over and said he was supposed to call the cops b/c I was creating a false ID card!
I laughed, thinking he was making a joke. But he continued on... saying it was serious and he was under orders to call the police if anyone makes a color copy of their passport. I just kinda said "ok, thanks for the info" and wrapped up my project and left.
The last thing the cops in this city would respond to right now is that!

01:01 pm I don't know what I find stranger... that Walgreen's sells five different flavors of Diet Coke, or that I bought them all so I could take this picture:

11:09 pm I'm watching SNL right now - I didn't wanna miss Scarlet Johansan who out of the blue became my #1 celebrity crush a month or so ago (replacing Kelly Ripa who is still high on the list). She's so charming and pretty!
Death Cab is playing right now... what a great episode! This is the first time I've seen SNL live in years. I usually catch it on reruns on E or something.

01:05 pm - Category 5!! Rally!! I had one of the best mornings in my life today!
I covered the rally to build category 5 levees that was held in the quarter today (coinciding with President Bush's visit to NOLA) for my Katrina doc. I was truly energized by the experience.
I arrived early... around 930am and was disappointed to see no one was there yet (the event started at 10). But alas, I heard cheering in the distance and soon found a couple hundred screaming activists a few blocks from the scheduled meeting point!
I was the first video vulture there, aside from my former co-worker who now anchors at CNN. The crowd was great! Lots of energy and a point was definitely made.
All the important "gets" were gotton for my film... I spoke on camera with: 1. Representative John LaBruzzo 2. the event organizer 3. lots of colorful participants wearing life jackets rain gear, floaters, etc.

01:22 am - Interviewing Harry Anderson Tonight I interviewed Harry Anderson of Night Court fame about the weekly town hall meetings held in his French Quarter club, Oswald's Speakeasy. He has a clean cut imagine from his sitcoms but he's really a tatooed bar owner. Interview went well...
Tomorrow morning I (hope) to rise and shine early early to get more storm damage B-roll and to cover a protest. You see Bush is coming to town tomorrow and the levee activists will be out in full force!
I need sleep or I'm not gonna make it. My mind is tired but I can never shut off at night. I have lots of nervous energy as things come together. The bigger this film gets the more stirred up I get too. I'm not sure why, the stakes arent that high.
I mean worst case scenario isnt that bad + best case scenario is wonderful = definition of a low stakes risk.
EDIT: I'm out the door at 8am... I woke up in plenty of time this morning!

01:34 pm - I hate to haggle... ... but you sometimes have to haggle.
I'm dealing with Discmakers in duplicating the Mardi Gras DVD. We talked on the phone then they emailed me a quote. If I had simply said "OK" I'd be paying $300 more and would receive the DVDs a week late. I had to actually say "well on your site it says..." several times. Their response "oh! that's a new change to our rates, I'm sorry... Ill adjust your quote!"
The thing is... those rates were on the site a month ago. I had checked back then.
It's no big deal. They bumped up the production date and dropped the $300. But still... I had to haggle.

12:42 pm Remember the grant I slaved over... and how I didn't take it as well as I could have when I didn't get it?
Well... last night I got a surprise phone call from Desire NOLA telling me I had received a grant for almost exactly the same amount of cash as the denied grant!
Their application process was much simpler - I filled out the form in 5-10 minutes unlike the first grant that took me weeks. I had actually forgotton all about applying which made last night's news that much more exciting.

02:36 pm - King Cake and Lots of Babies I am so much King Cake this weekend (ok, so not as much as all the babies imply... but still it was a lot). The post-binge guilt drove me to join a new gym called the St. Charles Ave Athletic Club.
It is my fourth gym membership in five months (oh the life of a nomad!)... you'd think I'd be in shape by now.
This is the first gym with a vew of "the avenue" which means if I really wanted to I could watch Mardi Gras parades roll while I rode the exercise bikes. But, no way!

08:59 am - VooDoo Fence Here are some screen shots of the footage I shot in the Bywater yesterday. I love these paintings. They line an alley leading to a small building where VooDoo ceremonies are held. It's amazing to me that these are the real deal... like most art in New Orleans, this is authentic.

06:15 pm I'm back in New Orleans for a while... today I shot some B roll in the Bywater and interviewed Irvin Mayfield in Armstrong Park for the Katrina Doc.

It's interesting here in New Orleans, to say the least. I'm glad I've been away - I feel I have a more objective point of view now.
